A Simple Guide to Internal Linking for Niche Websites

A Simple Guide to Internal Linking for Niche Websites

Why internal links matter more on a small, specialist site

If you run a niche business — a listed-building surveyor, an equine physiotherapist, a maker of bespoke staircases — your website probably has fewer than a hundred pages. That is a strength, not a weakness. It means every internal link you add carries real weight. Search engines use those links to work out which pages you consider important and how your topics relate to one another. Visitors use them to find the service they did not know you offered. On a huge site, one extra link is a drop in the ocean. On yours, a single well-placed link can change how a page performs.

The good news is that internal linking costs nothing but a bit of thought. You are not bidding for anything or waiting for someone to notice you. You are simply deciding what points where, and then writing it down properly.

Think in hubs and spokes, not a giant web

The most common mistake on specialist sites is trying to link everything to everything. You end up with a footer listing all forty of your services and a sidebar that follows visitors around like a lost dog. It feels helpful. It is not.

A calmer structure is a hub-and-spoke model. Choose your three or four core services and treat each one as a hub page. Everything related to that service — case studies, technical guides, FAQs, location pages, before-and-after write-ups — becomes a spoke that links up to the hub. The hub links down to two or three of the most relevant spokes, not all of them.

  • Hub: "Church restoration joinery"
  • Spokes: a case study on a Grade II listed chapel, a guide to oak grading, an FAQ on lead times, a page covering a specific county you work in
  • Cross-links: only where a genuine overlap exists, such as the chapel case study linking to the oak grading guide

This keeps the structure legible for search engines and, just as importantly, for a visitor who has landed on a deep page from a search result and has no idea what else you do.

Draw a simple map before you write a word

You do not need expensive tools for this. A spreadsheet with four columns is plenty: page address, the topic it targets, three pages it should link out to, and one line explaining why. Fill it in for every page on the site. On a sixty-page site this takes an afternoon, and it will expose problems you did not know you had.

The most useful thing it will reveal is orphan pages — pages with no internal links pointing to them at all. These are usually older service pages, a blog post from three years ago, or a page someone built for a campaign and then forgot. Search engines can struggle to find them, and visitors almost certainly will not. Give every orphan at least one sensible link from a relevant page, and preferably two or three.

Write anchor text that says what is on the other end

Anchor text is the words you make clickable, and it is where most niche sites lose easy ground. "Click here", "read more" and "find out more" tell a search engine nothing about the destination, and they give a visitor no reason to click.

Compare these:

  • Weak: "For more information about our workshops, click here."
  • Better: "We run hand-tied bouquet workshops in Bristol throughout the year."

Keep anchors short — usually two to six words — and make sure the same phrase is not pointing at two different pages. Vary the wording naturally rather than repeating an identical phrase every time; that reads as contrived and looks like you are gaming something. If the sentence only works with the words "click here", rewrite the sentence.

Put links where people actually read

Links inside the body of a page carry more weight than links crammed into a footer or a sitewide sidebar, because they sit in context and are more likely to be clicked. A few practical habits:

  • Link from your guides and blog posts to the service pages they naturally lead towards, and link back the other way from the service page to the guide.
  • Limit "related services" blocks to three genuinely related items rather than everything you offer.
  • Use breadcrumbs so visitors can see where a page sits within your structure.
  • Resist sitewide footer links to every service. They dilute the value of your in-page links and rarely earn clicks.

When you publish something new, add links to it from three existing relevant pages within the first week. A new page with no links pointing at it will sit quietly for months.

Keep the map alive

Internal linking is not a one-off job. Set a reminder twice a year to run through your spreadsheet again. Check for broken links, look for new orphan pages, and confirm that your anchors still describe what is on the other end — pages get rewritten and drift away from their original purpose.

Above all, read the sentence aloud before you add a link. If the anchor text sits awkwardly in the paragraph, the link will feel forced to a visitor too. Rewrite the sentence so the link belongs there. Done that way, internal linking stops being a technical chore and becomes what it should be: a helpful signpost, pointing people towards the thing they were about to ask you for anyway.
