Technical Checks Before Launching a New Website Section

Technical Checks Before Launching a New Website Section

Launching a new section of your website is one of the most exciting things a specialist business can do. Perhaps you are adding a service page for a niche you have been quietly mastering for years, or building out a resource hub for a particular type of customer. Either way, the moment you press publish is also the moment search engines form their first impression of those pages. If a crawler arrives and finds a noindex tag, a blocked folder or a canonical pointing at your staging domain, those carefully written pages can sit invisible for weeks while you wonder what went wrong. None of the checks below take long, but doing them before you go live saves an awful lot of unpicking later.

Confirm crawlers can actually reach the new pages

Crawlability is the most basic hurdle and, frustratingly, the one most often tripped up by good intentions.

  • Check your robots.txt file. Staging folders and development paths are often blocked by habit. Make sure nothing in the file disallows the new section or a parent folder it sits inside.
  • Remove leftover noindex tags. If the pages were built on a staging site, meta robots instructions such as "noindex, nofollow" are a common leftover. Check every template the new section uses, not just the first page.
  • Link to the new pages from existing ones. A section reachable only from the main menu on one template is easy for crawlers to miss. Add a few contextual internal links from related service or article pages, using descriptive anchor text.
  • Update your XML sitemap. Add the new URLs, remove any old ones that are genuinely gone, and re-submit the sitemap on launch day.
  • Watch out for filters and pagination. If your new section generates faceted URLs, decide which versions should be crawled and which should be kept out, or you will create hundreds of near-duplicate pages overnight.

Get canonical tags and URL structure right

Canonical tags tell search engines which version of a page is the one to index. Mistakes here are subtle and slow to diagnose, so a two-minute review is worth it.

  • Every page should have a self-referencing canonical using the exact live URL, including the correct protocol and subdomain.
  • Check nothing points at staging, a test domain or a tracking-parameter version of the page.
  • Be consistent with trailing slashes and with www versus non-www. Pick one and apply it everywhere, including internal links.
  • Avoid canonical chains, where page A points to B, which points to C. Point every page directly at its final destination.

Test the mobile layout before you publish

For most niche service providers, the majority of visitors arrive on a phone, often while standing in a van, a workshop or a client's hallway. If the new section is awkward to use there, it will not convert and its engagement signals will suffer.

  • Tap every button, link and form field with a thumb rather than a mouse. Tap targets should be comfortably sized and well spaced.
  • Check that any sticky call-to-action bar does not cover the content or the form's submit button.
  • Read the text at default zoom. Small, grey body copy is a common launch mistake on redesigned templates.
  • Test any tables, pricing grids or comparison blocks sideways, and make sure nothing overflows the screen edge.
  • Avoid pop-ups that cover most of the screen on first load. If you need one, trigger it after a clear sign of engagement.

Check page speed and layout stability

Speed affects both rankings and enquiries, and it is far easier to fix before launch than afterwards.

  • Compress and correctly size images. A hero image exported at 4000 pixels wide is one of the fastest ways to slow a page down.
  • Lazy-load images below the fold, but load the main above-the-fold image promptly so the largest contentful element appears quickly.
  • Reserve space for images, embeds and ad slots so the layout does not jump about while the page loads.
  • Audit third-party scripts such as chat widgets, booking tools and review feeds. Each one adds weight; remove any that are not earning their place.
  • Test on a mid-range phone over a mobile connection, not just on a fast desktop. That is the experience most of your visitors will have.

Add structured data for the details that matter

Structured data helps search engines understand what your page is and who it is for, which matters more for specialist services than for generic content.

  • Use LocalBusiness or Service markup where relevant, and keep your name, address, phone number and opening hours identical to the details shown on the page.
  • Mark up breadcrumbs if the new section sits within a hierarchy, and make sure they match the visible navigation path.
  • Use FAQ or HowTo markup only for questions and answers that genuinely appear on the page.
  • Add Product or Offer markup for any priced packages, and only include reviews you can actually evidence.
  • Validate the markup before publishing, and check it renders on a mobile result preview.

Publish-day checks and the fortnight that follows

On the day you go live, crawl the new URLs yourself and confirm each one returns a success response, shows the right canonical and displays the intended meta title and description. View the section on a phone, submit your updated sitemap, and confirm the new pages appear in your analytics within a day or two. Then keep an eye on things for a fortnight: check whether the pages are being indexed, whether they are picking up impressions for the terms you targeted, and whether anything is being crawled but ignored. Catching a small technical problem in that window is straightforward. Catching it three months later, after the pages have been quietly skipped over, is a much longer job.
